Pfabe's Wall-to-Wall 70th Anniversary Celebration Sale and Prize Contest

Date: June 13, 2016 - July 7, 2016

Event Description: In recognition of the 70th Anniversary, displays will be set up to show Pfabe's memorabilia over the years. Several Prize contests will also be held to generate excitement among the community. A month-long celebration will feature giveaways, special discounts, and recital performances by music students.

Employer Re-entry Seminar presented by Lake County Re-entry Coalition

Event Description:

We invite you to attend the first Lake County Employer Re-entry Seminar, a FREE event which will focus on the opportunities available for business to participate in re-entry.  This event will provide guidance, as well as legal advice, tax credit information and real-life examples of the benefits and risks of hiring returning citizens after serving criminal sentences.  Perhaps you've considered hiring someone with a criminal history but aren't quite sure if it's worth the risk.  There are tax incentives and risk protection available to you that will be presented.  There is also specialized training available to inmates that makes them vital to the workforce, once they've paid their debt to society.  Being informed on these issues is a wonderful way to learn how being a part of the solution in today's re-entry issue can also benefit you professionally and personally.

Lake County's Underground Railroad Heritage

Date: June 18, 2016

Event Description: Join us for a drive-it-yourself tour focusing on the underground railroad in Lake County and Ohio. Cathy Nelson from the Ohio Humanities Council will talk on the Ohio Underground Railroad at the Lake County History Center, Unionville Tavern will re-create a modern reenactment for visitors to step into the famous Milton Clarke slave escape that inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” and St. John Baptist’s will tell their 175 year history as the first African American mission in Painesville. As you drive past Underground Railroad stations and abolitionist homes (maps provided online or at the museum), participants will come back to the History Center for a BBQ meal in the LCHS event barn and listen to a dramatic reading of the Milton Clarke story. This is the first time a dramatic reading will have been done, and the first time residents will be able to physically step into the shoes of the Kentucky slave catchers, runaway slaves, and abolitionists of Unionville Tavern's most famous incident.

Kids Fishing Derby

In celebration of its 150th anniversary, the Lake County YMCA is hosting a free kids fishing derby. Kids ages 6-15 are welcome to participate with a parent/guardian. Derby age groups are 6–9 years old, 10–12 years old and 13–15 years old. All participants will receive a t-shirt and will be entered for door prizes. Kids should provide their own fishing pole and bait (worms) as limited equipment will be available. Awards wil be given in each age group and everyone will have a chance to win great door prizes for participating. The fishing derby will be held rain or shine, so bring appropriate weather gear. Also, the pond at Painesville Rec Park will be fully stocked for the derby.
